Lube goes on sensitive tissue, so formulation matters. Water-based is the safest all-around choice and toy-compatible; silicone-based lasts longer but can degrade silicone toys over time; oil-based breaks down latex condoms. We check ingredient lists for things like glycerin and parabens, which can cause irritation for some people.

What to look for

• Water-based vs. silicone-based vs. hybrid — and what each is compatible with
• Osmolality and pH, if listed — closer to the body's natural range means less irritation risk
• Condom compatibility (oil-based lubes degrade latex)
• Scented or flavored formulas can introduce extra irritants — plain is the safer default
• Bottle design — pump vs. flip-top affects mess and control during use
